Embarking on a Seabourn cruise to Greenland, Spencer Travel’s Denise Gilfeather had the privilege of experiencing a truly extraordinary adventure.
Greenland is a land of ice and captivating beauty; I have made incredible memories and had some truly awe-inspiring moments.
Here are some of the highlights from her amazing journey.
The Ice Landing in East Greenland
Denise was fortunate enough to enjoy an ice landing in East Greenland. It was a stroke of luck, as the previous year had not allowed for such an experience due to the limited sea ice. The excitement among the expedition team was contagious. Stepping out onto the ice during a foggy afternoon, the ship in the distance resembled a ghost ship, evoking a sense of wonder — a true Titanic moment.
Sea Kayaking in Prince Christine Sound
Among the snow-capped mountains and glaciers of Prince Christine Sound, Denise enjoyed a sea kayaking expedition on beautiful tranquil waters. Setting off from the boat in Zodiacs, a trail of kayaks followed. The experience was nothing short of magical. As a first-time sea kayaker, Denise felt at ease knowing that she was in capable hands with the experienced staff by her side. This allowed her to immerse herself in the surroundings, absorbing the breathtaking scenery and truly enjoying the moment.
Deep Diving in Seabourn Submersibles
One of the most exciting aspects of the journey was the opportunity to take part in a deep dive experience using Seabourn’s state-of-the-art submersibles. Accompanied by only a handful of passengers and a skilled pilot, Denise descended to the depths of the ocean. This once-in-a-lifetime experience provided a mesmerizing glimpse into the hidden world beneath the surface.
Visiting Greenland’s Historic Settlements
The exploration of Greenland extended beyond its natural wonders, as Denise had the chance to visit several of its settlements. Each settlement had its own distinct character, varying in size and population. The smallest settlement consisted of only 100 inhabitants. It was a humbling experience to witness the resilience of the people living off the land and sea, relying on their tight-knit communities for survival. Back in the day each colour represented either a service or profession, nowadays the colour keeps the settlements looking vibrant.
Experiencing the Land of the Midnight Sun
Denise had the privilege of experiencing the Land of the Midnight Sun. With days blending into nights, the sun rarely dipped below the horizon. Even when it did, it was rising again a couple of hours later. The twilight cast a golden glow over the majestic landscape. Mountains, sea ice, glaciers, and the abundant wildlife were bathed in this beautiful light, providing countless picture-perfect moments and memories.
Denise’s journey to Greenland with Seabourn was magical and a once in a lifetime experience.
